Water-Damaged Laptop, Phone, or Drive? Do This Immediately
Liquid and electronics are a race against corrosion. The moment water, coffee, or seawater reaches a circuit board, a slow chemical process begins that eats away the tiny connections your data depends on. What you do in the first few minutes — and what you don’t do — makes the difference.
The first 60 seconds
- Cut the power. If it’s on, shut it down. If you can safely remove the battery (many external drives, some laptops), do it. For a phone or sealed laptop you can’t open, just power it off. Do not keep using it to “save a few things first.”
- Unplug everything and stand the device up so liquid can drain out rather than pool on the board.
- Don’t test it by turning it back on to “see if it still works.” Powering a wet board is what causes short circuits and accelerates corrosion — this is the single biggest mistake.
The first few hours
- Skip the rice. It’s a myth. Rice doesn’t pull moisture from inside a sealed device, and it sheds starch and dust that make things worse. Silica gel packets are marginally better but still won’t reach corrosion already forming on the board.
- Don’t apply heat — no hairdryers, ovens, or radiators. Heat warps components and drives moisture deeper.
- If it was salt water or a sugary/dirty liquid, the urgency is higher: those residues are far more corrosive and conductive than clean water. Time matters even more.
- Leave it off and get it to a professional as soon as you can. Corrosion continues silently whether the device looks dry or not.
Why speed matters so much
Once liquid hits a board, mineral deposits and corrosion begin bridging connections and eating through traces. A device recovered within a day or two often does far better than the same device left in a drawer for a week “to dry out.” Drying the surface does nothing about the corrosion working inside. The clock is real, so treat it as an emergency even if the screen still lit up at first.
What recovery involves
For water-damaged devices, a lab’s job is usually to clean and repair, not just read the drive:
- Laptops: if the drive itself is a separate component and survived, the data may be recoverable directly. If the drive’s board was hit, it’s cleaned and repaired, or the memory is read on other equipment.
- Phones: the board is cleaned of corrosion, damaged power components are repaired or replaced, and the phone is brought up just long enough to offload data. (Remember: iPhones need your passcode because of encryption — see our iPhone recovery guide.)
- External drives: the enclosure and control board often take the hit while the drive mechanism survives; a lab can move the platters or repair the electronics.
What to have ready
- Note what liquid it was (clean water vs. salt water vs. a sugary drink) and when it happened — both change the approach.
- Locate any passwords or encryption keys (BitLocker, FileVault, your phone passcode). A physical recovery is worthless without them if the device was encrypted.

Power it off, don’t turn it back on, skip the rice and the hairdryer, and get it to a lab quickly. Water damage is one of the few genuinely time-sensitive recovery situations — corrosion doesn’t wait.
